Independent Advocate
Roles in Birmingham and Walsall – office, home, and hybrid working available

  • Full-time (37.5 hours) or part-time, occasional evening/weekend work required
  • £25,708.80 per annum pro rata (£15,420.60 part time)

Our client is a charity that has provided independent advocacy support in Birmingham and Walsall since 2002. They aim to provide adults at risk with an independent advocate to ensure individuals are heard and their rights, concerns, and needs are acted upon.

About the Independent Advocate role:

The charity is seeking an experienced Independent Advocate to join their team. You will work within their Equal Opportunities framework to provide issue-based advocacy, ensuring an anti-discriminatory service. You will work directly with people who may be marginalised or vulnerable to strengthen their voice, champion their rights, and change their lives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing community advocacy, Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy, Advocacy under the Care Act, Independent Mental Health Advocacy, ICAS, and the role of the Relevant Persons Representative under DoLS legislation to Advocacy Matters’ advocacy partners
  • Liaising with a wide range of professionals within the NHS and Adults and Communities, Third Sector, and housing organisations in Walsall & Birmingham
  • Regularly monitoring and reviewing Advocacy Plans with partners
  • Managing a caseload effectively and maintaining up-to-date case files to an excellent standard on the cloud-based case management system
  • Producing a Risk Assessment for each advocacy partner supported
  • Attending Advocacy Matters Team meetings and Social Events
  • Attending formal supervision with the operations manager every 4-6 weeks
  • Working in a person-centred way and adhering to Advocacy Matters Policies and Procedures at all times
  • Attending conferences and supporting with marketing and development of the charity.
  • Closing advocacy files efficiently, preventing dependency arising


You can manage your diary and work flexible hours – they will just need to fall within the company's operating hours.

The successful applicant will receive a comprehensive induction and full training to perform the above duties to the highest possible standards.

About you:

The ideal candidate will have experience working in social care, ideally case work. You must be passionate about providing support to people who need their voices to be heard. This is an exciting position where no two days are the same, so you will need to be flexible.

You will also have the following knowledge, skills, and experiences:

  • Experience working with vulnerable individuals in
  • Experience in keeping accurate records and monitoring Advocacy Matters work, producing high-quality reports, and excellent letter/report writing skills
  • Ability to manage and guide people through change
  • Ability to communicate with vulnerable individuals with complex communication needs
  • Knowledge of services for vulnerable people in the Birmingham and Walsall area
  • Skilled in working on own initiative and prioritising workload/diary management, sharing responsibilities with individuals, and as part of a team
  • Ability to negotiate and handle conflict with people at different organisational levels
  • Excellent telephone manner and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work in various community settings
  • Ability to communicate with vulnerable adults in a person-centred way
